Metal Plate Fabrication

Metal Plate Fabrication

Metal plate fabrication is the process of working with metal stock to form full sheets, which are then cut and separated into individual parts. Common metal cutting methods include flame cutting, laser cutting, wire EDM, shearing, plasma cutting, and waterjet cutting. Laser cutting equipment was initially developed for thin sheets, offering high speed and exceptional precision for materials under 5mm.

Today, high-power laser cutters can process plates up to 50mm thick, delivering superior cut quality compared to flame cutting.

The versatility, strength, and durability of fabricated metal plate have established it as a modern manufacturing technology. The application of CNC and laser technologies, in particular, enables highly precise cuts and shapes with exacting specifications.

Sheet Metal Forming & Fabrication Processes
1

Shearing

Shearing is a fabrication process that cuts sheet metal, bar stock, or plate into smaller sizes. It is typically performed using equipment like squaring shears or bench shears. The process relies on shear force applied between two blades (one fixed and one moving) to slice through the metal.

2

Laser Cutting

Laser cutting or engraving uses a high-power focused laser beam to irradiate the metal sheet, rapidly heating the material to its melting or vaporization point. It offers extremely high precision, produces smooth edges, and can handle complex patterns. Its applications are extensive, covering metals, plastics, wood, glass, and more.

3

Bending

Bending involves applying force via a clamp on a press brake or similar machine to form sheet metal into a shape that matches the tooling. It is used to create various structures with angled or curved profiles. Bending is a cost-effective forming method, especially suitable for low to medium volume production.

4

Deep Drawing

Deep drawing is a process where a metal blank is placed over a die and mechanically or hydraulically stretched into a desired shape. It is suitable for producing round, rectangular, and irregularly shaped metal parts. This method is particularly applicable for deep, complex products such as automotive components, kitchenware, enclosures, and containers.
